Don’t Block Your Blessings

In my research to become a life coach I would come across tons of coaches who proclaimed that they could help their clients ‘get out of their own way.’ Other coaches promised to help clients get ‘unstuck’.

Today during my prayer time I believe I heard the Holy Spirit say ‘get out of your own way.’ I had been praying about getting closer to God and asking Him to purify my heart and help me give Him my all. What I gathered as a I prayed is that when I disobey I am blocking my own blessings-in other words, getting in my own way thereby making me feel stuck and stagnant.

I always hesitate to discuss my own walk with the Lord and areas I struggle with obedience in because I don’t want to be judged. However, in the interest of transparency I will share.

One thing I struggle with is overeating. Even after losing and keeping off over 75 lbs, this is still an area I wrestle with. But if I can’t heed the Holy Spirit when He tells me to stop eating how can He trust me with bigger things?

You may feel this is small, but I believe this is how we block our blessings. We hold on to those little habits, those little things that no one else sees and so we tell ourselves it’s not a big deal. But the Bible says,

Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom. Song of Solomon 2:15 NIV

Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors. Deuteronomy 8:1 NIV

The Lord expects us to follow every command He gives us, not just the ‘big’ ones. I think many of us tend to think that if we are not committing sexual sin, ‘going to the club’, murder, lying etc then we are ok. But anything that God leads you to do or (not do) personally that you do not obey is sin. Sin is sin.

God gives us commands because He sees the big picture and knows what is best for us. I often have to remind myself that God is not a fun snatcher. He doesn’t give commands just to flex his power or for kicks. They are always for His glory and our good.

In the Old Testament God often instructed the Israelites not to marry other peoples. Not because of what we today know of as ‘race’ but because these others often worshipped other gods and had other ungodly customs. We see in Judges 16 the popular story of Samson and Delilah. Samson’s romantic relationship with a non-Israelite woman cost him everything. We can guess that Samson’s focus on his attraction for her made the wisdom of God seem silly, and even unnecessary.

God always has a purpose in what He tells us.

I hope this encourages you today to go all in with God. Obey His every command. Not because it’s easy, but so that you may “live and increase and may enter and possess” everything God has for your here and in the hereafter. Trust that God wants to favor you and bless you as a result of your obedience as He did David, and Ruth and Hannah.

“Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the Lord your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the Lord your God… Deuteronomy 28:1-2

Let’s pray:

Lord thank you for your goodness, mercy, and love. Lord we know that we can’t earn Your grace and can never deserve Your blessings. However, we do know that You keep Your promises and Your Word doesn’t return to You void (Isaiah 55:11). Please Lord give us the grace to be obedient and even joyful in our obedience. Help us God to love You with our whole hearts. Let our obedience be an outpouring of that love .

In Jesus’s name,

Amen.

PS If you don’t know Jesus as your personal savior He longs to come into your heart and have a personal relationship with you.  Romans 10:9 says,

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. NLT

Pray this prayer:

Lord Jesus, I come to you humbly asking you to forgive my sins. I believe that you died and rose again three days later to pay for my sins. Thank you for dying for me.  Please Lord, come into my heart. I give control of my life over to you. Please God, from this moment forward help me to live for you and do your will. Thank you Lord, that now I am saved. I no longer have to fear death. Please help me be all you made me to be.

In Jesus name,

Amen.
