The Work is Finished

Once for my birthday my husband planned an epic surprise. He simply told me to pack a bag and that we were going on a short trip. Little did I know that ‘short trip’ was a flight to Vegas! Not only did he secure airplane tickets and a hotel room, but he also invited two of my best friends who magically appeared in Vegas too.

It was amazing.

Half of the greatness of the gift was not in the trip or the shows we saw or even in my friends showing up. The beauty of it was that I didn’t really have to do anything. He secured a babysitter for our then two boys. He found a flight. He booked the hotel. He researched Vegas shows he knew I’d like. He meshed schedules with my friends and invited them along. He kept it a surprise for weeks.

All I had to do was show up with my bags packed and say yes.

Any wife/mom will tell you that this is the stuff of dreams. Most of our lives as busy women is chock full of planning, prepping, organizing, cleaning, cooking, working etc. Imagine the man you love doing all that for you and all you have to do is show up?

I’ve been reading the book of Hebrews during my quiet time the past few weeks. Never has it been so clear to me before this study that Jesus has already done all the heavy lifting on the cross.

His work on the cross is finished. Finito. Done. Complete.

It’s not like I didn’t already know this, but through this study God has really allowed it to seep into my heart. I am something of a perfectionist and fight daily to not feel like I have to earn God’s love. This truth that God is allowing to take root in my heart is so unbelievably refreshing and freeing.

Yes, I need to be obedient.

Yes, I must continue to press toward the mark.

But not because I need to earn my way to heaven. My precious, beautiful, self sacrificing savior Jesus already earned my way to heaven. He already by paid the price for my sin. The heavy lifting has been done.

Just like that trip to Vegas all we need to do is just show up bags packed and say yes.

Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds[f] so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.  That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant. Hebrews 9:14,15 NLT

Our obedience, our ‘works’, are the easy part-just like packing that bag and showing up to get the plane. Jesus’s torment and death was the real work. Just like when my husband painstakingly planned that trip. He did the major work. I just showed up and reaped the benefits.

Yes we still have to do our part. I couldn’t sit at home and paint my nails and expect to reap the benefits of that trip. But because we know the work and sacrifice that went into our salvation, and how little God requires in return in comparison to the benefits we reap, we can show up with a joyful yes. A yes that is willing, voluntary and expectant.

Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.  For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. Romans 8:18-19 NLT

I hope this encourages you today to trust in Jesus’s finished work in the cross. I hope it frees you to love Him and accept the benefits of this work gratefully, joyfully, and freely so that you can walk in the freedom He paid for us all to enjoy.

Let’s pray.

Lord we thank you for your finished work on the cross. Thank you Lord for your grace and your love. Thank you for your salvation plan. Please help us God to receive your love and your grace with hearts wide open. Please help to get rid of any works mentality. Help us to receive to not believe the lies of the enemy. Help us God to be obedient because we love you and want to stay near you. God we love you. Please let your perfect will be done in our lives.

In Jesus name,

PS If you don’t know Jesus as your personal savior He longs to come into your heart and have a personal relationship with you.  Romans 10:9 says,

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. NLT

Pray this prayer:

Lord Jesus, I come to you humbly asking you to forgive my sins. I believe that you died and rose again three days later to pay for my sins. Thank you for dying for me.  Please Lord, come into my heart. I give control of my life over to you. Please God, from this moment forward help me to live for you and do your will. Thank you Lord, that now I am saved. I no longer have to fear death. Please help me be all you made me to be.

In Jesus name,
